CALL TO ORDER

Chairman Milt Moran called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM at The Silver Legacy Resort in Reno, Nevada

MINUTES OF THE MARCH 16, 2006 SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING

The minutes of the March 16, 2006 semi-annual meeting were approved as mailed.

COMMITTEE REPORT

Scaling Practices Committee Chairman, Gary Curtis, reviewed the September 12, 2006 meeting and log rollout. When deducting for frost seams, a scaler needs to consider both the frost cracks on the ends of the log as well as the seams in the bark and on the surface of the log. There were some logs with many knots up to 2 ½ inches that had extremely large knot collars but were not fast growth. Scalers can use their judgment on down grading logs in this extreme situation. When scaling and grading pine, the committee reviewed the procedure for taking deductions for slope of grain and downgrading when this defect is present. It was the consensus of the group that proper deductions should be made when the slope of grain exceeded the maximum allowed for a No. 2 sawmill grade. However, the grade should not be reduced as long as the lumber recovery can be met. The West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau agreed with this procedure.  

RULE CHANGE REQUEST

There were no requests for rule changes.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Chairman Milt Moran appointed Jamie Crowell as Chairman of the Nominating Committee along with Jerry Ashby and Gary Curtis.

OTHER BUSINESS

There was no other business.

TIME AND PLACE OF THE NEXT MEETING

The next semi-annual meeting will be hosted by the Yamhill Bureau on April 19, 2007 at the Village Green Resort in Cottage grove, Oregon.
